Understanding your BMI

BMI, the Body Mass Index, is a guide. It compares a weight and a height. It does not say everything about health.

What does BMI mean?

BMI means Body Mass Index. It is a number that compares your weight to your height. In French, it is called IMC (Indice de masse corporelle).

The formula

BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. For example, 70 kg at 1.75 m gives 70 divided by (1.75 times 1.75), which is 22.9.

The standard categories

BMICategory
Under 18.5Underweight
18.5 to 24.9Normal weight
25 to 29.9Overweight
30 and aboveObesity

The limits

BMI does not take muscle mass, age, fat distribution or other health factors into account. Two people with the same BMI can be very different. That is why BMI is a general guide, not a diagnosis, and does not replace medical advice.

How to use it

Use BMI as a starting point, not as a conclusion. If you have a question about your health, talk to a health professional.
